Vietnam Women's Volleyball Face Asiad 20 Squad Crisis: Only Three Outside Hitters Remain

The Vietnam women's volleyball team is facing a rarely seen personnel crisis ahead of Asiad 20. The 20th Asian Games will take place in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, from September 19 to October 4, 2026, but the squad issue remains unresolved. After the 2026 Asian Volleyball Championship in China, head coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet is trying to rebuild the outside hitter position after losing key players to injury and health problems. Asiad 20 allows only 12 registered players, two fewer than the Asian Championship. The roster arithmetic puts the coaching staff in a difficult position. The team has almost cemented an 11-player core, leaving only one vacant slot. That leaves no margin for extra injuries during the competition. During the Asian Championship, Vietnam entered with four outside hitters, including two teenagers. Vi Thi Nhu Quynh was absent because of health issues, while Nguyen Thi Uyen suffered a serious injury. As a result, only three healthy outside hitters remain: Tran Thi Thanh Thuy, Pham Quynh Huong aged 18, and Bui Thi Anh Thao aged 17. Nguyen Thi Uyen was considered crucial for reception stability. Vi Thi Nhu Quynh helped share the attacking burden with Thanh Thuy. Without them, Vietnam becomes highly dependent on Thanh Thuy as a single scoring threat. Opponents such as China, Japan and Thailand can use strong jump serves to disrupt Vietnam's reception system, making the fast offense less effective. The candidates to fill the remaining outside hitter spot include Dinh Thi Thuy of LPBank Ninh Binh, Nguyen Thi Phuong of Binh chung Thong tin, Pham Thi Nguyet Anh of the military team, Hoang Hong Hanh, Do Lai Yen Nhi and Tran Tu Linh. However, Dinh Thi Thuy underperformed at the AVC Cup, while Phuong and Nguyet Anh lack consistency. Vietnamese volleyball does not yet have strong quantitative data to evaluate these backup players. Most assessments are based on domestic league impressions. With such a thin outside hitter pool, Vietnam will likely need a more defensive, transition-based style rather than relying entirely on structured first-tempo attacks. The 12-player limit amplifies every risk. A poor result at Asiad 20 also carries FIVB world ranking points, which could affect Olympic qualification for Los Angeles 2028. The coaching staff must find a solution very soon to avoid a collapse at one of the biggest sporting events in Asia.
