Two in the morning, the phone rang, and a truth cracked open.
I was in Chengdu. Outside the window the city had gone dark hours earlier, leaving only the yellow streaks of the ring road and the sound of freight trucks heading back to the depots at dawn. The message came from a twenty-seven-year-old analyst at a V.League club — a kid who once sent me clumsy Excel sheets when he was a student, and who now has a coaching licence and a club jacket with a crest.
